Many Toastmasters in District 73 may be unaware of the death of the wonderful Patrick Shing. That became evident during the Annual Convention in Adelaide in late May. It was moving to hear International Speech contest winner Sarah Hanieh dedicate her win to Patrick.
Patrick died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on 18th December 2015 after battling prostate cancer since 2013. Patrick did his utmost to remain at home and was cared for lovingly by his siblings. After a private family burial, a celebration of his life was held at Patrick’s beloved Carlton Football Club rooms. The rooms were overflowing with the special people in his life – family, Toastmasters, childhood friends, work friends and running friends. It makes me smile just remembering the beautiful and funny stories that were shared. The stories demonstrated Patrick’s wacky sense of humour and lightening quick wit, his compassion, caring and intelligence.
What really stood out was how Patrick prepared us for his death. He must have been a list man because he ticked many items off, each designed to make it easier on those left behind. This is the kind and thoughtful man he was. Patrick did have aspirations of continuing his leadership in District 73 and beyond. He would have been a fine leader as the Toastmasters International President. That is our very great loss.
